Week of September 3rd

Our first Unit Culmination is this week!  I am so excited for the students to show what they have learned. We will have a very busy week with performance practices, our normal classroom work, and lots of hands-on experiments.  Please make sure your child is getting enough rest at night so they will be refreshed and ready for the next day!

Here are a few reminders for the week:
-  Our first culmination is this Friday!
-  We will celebrate Grandparents Day on Friday during lunch.
-  Don't forget Monday is a holiday!
-  Please continue sending box tops!  First Grade wants to win first place!

Here is what we will be doing this week:

Language Arts:  We have finished our comic, The Adventures in Cartooning", and will begin writing a class comic.  Each student will be responsible for a part of the story to write and illustrate.  I hope to present their comic during our unit culmination.  The students will also work through centers to practice capitalizing names and titles, place names, and then days and months.

Spelling Words:  sick, kick, brick, stick, word, action, name, Wednesday, September, when

Challenge Words:  sound, strength, country

Sentence Dictation:  He can kick the stick but not the brick.

Reading:  I will be sending home sight words for the students to learn.  I will assess them on Thursdays.  Please make flash cards with these words and practice them every night.  If your child, masters the words before Thursday, please let me know and I will send new words.  This week, we will be reading stories in centers.  The students will be asked to identify the characters (good and bad), settings, plots, conflict, resolution, and ending.  During their center times, I will be checking their oral reading fluency for improvement from the last assessment.

Math:  The students did a great job on their math test last week!  We will now begin learning addition strategies.  The addition problems will be easy, however, I will be looking for mastery of the addition strategy that is taught in class.  Many of the strategies should help aid the student during their mad minute.

Science:  The students will be participating in a science experiment to discover if the amount of water changes after it is frozen.  They will also begin learning about the different types of matter:  solid, liquid, and gas through other hands-on experiments.  So, in other words, you do not want to miss out this week!!!
