Week of August 27th

I realize the title of my blog is "Crazy for First grade", however, that perfectly sums up how I feel about  my class!  Each student is growing and showing true leadership skills every day!  One of my favorite sentences written this week was:  This story reminds me of my brother because he is a dwarf.  Your children are such a JOY to teach!

Here are a few reminders for the week:
-  Field trip to the Children's Museum is this Friday!  Please have permission slips and money turned in by Tuesday.
- I sent an email about our book for the next unit.  The cost of the book is $4.50.  Please turn in money by Thursday.  If writing a check, please make payable to Tiffany Moye.
-  P.E. is Monday!  Don't forget to wear your jersey.

Here is what we will be doing this week:

Language Arts:  We will wrap up our lesson on common and proper nouns and have a small assessment on Tuesday.  The students have been working hard on their versions of the original story, "The Three Little Pigs."  I cannot wait for them to share their creative stories with you.  This week, we will also begin learning and practicing when to capitalize.

Spelling Words:  Tuesday, comics, hero, pin, thin, spin, skin, and from  (yes, there are only 8 words due to our short week)

Challenge Words:  Many of my students are learning their words by Tuesday morning.  So as a challenge, I will be posting challenge words.  I would like to encourage every student to choose at least one word for their spelling test, however, you may choose all of them.  This weeks challenge words will be:  create, adventure, and fairytale.

Sentence Dictation:  His thin skin had a pin in it.

Reading:  We will begin reading the comic "Adventures in Cartooning" by James Sturn.  The students will be asked to identify characters, setting, plots, and solutions in different comics.  They will also learn how to create their own comic.  As part of reading, I will be sending home sight words each week.  The students will be required to master the list of words by the end of the week.  Learning their sight words will help with their reading fluency.

Math:  On Monday, we will rotate centers to review skills learned in the addition and subtraction story problem topic.  Tuesday, the students will take a formal assessment.  Please look for a study guide on Monday night.

Social Studies:  Oceans and continents have taken over my floor!  Thank you to Anna Laura Brett for sharing a floor puzzle of the Oceans and Continents!  We will wrap up our study on the oceans and continents with an assessment on Thursday.  Their booklets we are making in class will be their study guide.  The students will be making paper mache globes on Tuesday and Wednesday.  I would LOVE for a couple of parents to volunteer their hands during this time.  Social Studies begins at 1:55 and ends at 2:40.  Please let me know if you will be available to help out.

I look forward to another great week!
