FIRST GRADE WON THE SCRIPT CONTEST!!! Thank you so much for supporting our school through script and for helping us win our popsicle party. We (I) LOVE to win!! One of my favorite questions this week was, "Can we 'break it down' after this assignment?" I know I probably say this every week, but I LOVE my kiddos!
Here are a few reminders for the week:
- Monday is P.E. day so please wear jerseys.
- We will be going to the Children's Museum on Friday. Please look for a new permission slip on Monday.
- We are still collecting box tops! Please send in all box tops by October 1st.
Here is what we will be doing this week:
Reading: We will continue reading our chapter book, "The Family Under the Bridge." In class, the students will begin journaling on different topics in the book, create a story timeline, and discover new vocabulary words. They will have a comprehension quiz on the story on Wednesday.
Language Arts: We are really rolling along with our objectives in Language Arts. This week, we will begin learning and identifying adjectives. One great way to practice this at home is to have your child pick a toy and use descriptive words to describe it. They use adjectives ALL the time! One of my favorite sentences this week was, "These people are weird." You have to love a child's honesty.
Spelling Words: Friday, city, tower, street, what, with, they, busy, each, there
Challenge Words: transportation, engineer (Remember you only have to choose one)
Math: The students have mastered addition strategies! This week, we will build on the skills we learned through the last topic and begin learning subtraction strategies. I want to encourage you to allow your child to play Whacky Math or work IXL lessons to help them build their confidence in these skills.
Science: Physical or Chemical? This will be the question the students will be asked all week. We will be learning about physical and chemical changes. On Wednesday, we will create "Fabulous Flubber" and discuss the different changes during the activity. I would LOVE to have two parents come in to help with this activity. Please let me know if you are willing to get a little sticky.
Conceptual: This week, we will learn about structures, bridges, and the Interstate System. The students will be participating in hands-on activities where we will see who can build the tallest structure and the longest bridge. So hopefully by the end of the week we will have several aspiring engineers and architects.
