Week of October 8th

We WON the box top party!!!  Thank you to all of the parents who took the time out to cut and paste box tops for the past several months.  I am not sure how many our class individually collected, however, I do know that what was collected will help the school tremendously.
I have reading scores from the star reader assessment and from my one-on-one assessments.  I will not be sending these home because I feel as though I need to conference with each of you about your child's individual scores.  If I have not already pulled you aside, please come by or schedule a time when we can discuss the scores.

Here are a few reminders for the week:

-  We have a field trip Monday to Mitchell Farms.  If you are driving, please be at the school at 10:00.  We will be having class from 8 - 10 that day!
-  Next week is spirit week.  Please check the school newsletter for each day's attire.  On Monday, you can dress tacky but try to keep their clothes appropriate for the field trip.
-  Fall break is the week after next week.

Here is a peek at what we will be doing this week:

Language Arts:  This week, we will begin learning about the four types of sentences.  The students will continue practicing how to correctly write a sentence and identifying the following parts of speech:  noun, verb, pronoun, and adjectives.

Reading:  We will begin our new chapter book this week!  "The Class Election from the Black Lagoon" by Mike Thaler is on a third grade reading level.  The students have been doing really well with their sight words.  Our goal is now to learn the words AND be able to apply them within passages.  It is great if they are able to read words quickly, however, if they do not understand what they are reading then it is pointless.  This week for homework, I will be sending home two to three comprehension questions to go along with the chapters they will read at night.

Spelling Words:  black, election, vote, speech, people, blow, show, flow, grow, snow

Challenge Words:  president and treasurer (please choose one)

Math: The students will practice filling out a hundreds chart and using it to discover patterns, identify numbers before, between, and after, and to determine greater than and less than.  We will also be discovering even and odd numbers through a number hunt.

Science:  This week, we will be discovering buoyancy through several hands-on water experiments. I am really excited to see how the students interact with the lesson and how they apply it to their every day lives.
