Week of April 22nd

The First grade class has truly gotten into the spirit of economics.  We have been trading stock and watching our money grow or shrink each day.  The students have also enjoyed their classroom jobs.  I believe their favorite day is "Payday Friday" where they are paid for their classroom jobs and are able to shop at our store.  Through learning and applying our vocabulary terms this past week, we have decided that we want to embark on a business adventure.  Our business name is "Firsty Lemonade."  The students have worked really hard to secure an investor (Deleta), create a logo, design the look of our product, and advertisement. We are in need of a tent to put over our lemonade stand.  If you have a tent and are willing to allow us to borrow it, please   email me asap. All proceeds will go to the K&1 fun day that will occur after testing.

Here are a few reminders for the week:
-  PE Monday.
-  The Firsty Lemonade stand will be open for business Monday!  Please bring 25 cents to support our company.  We will be selling lemonade and lemonade pops.

Here is a sneak peek of what we will be doing this week:

Language Arts:  We will continue reading our chapter book, Lunch Money by Andrew Clement.  The students will be comparing and contrasting the main characters in the story, connecting the story to real life situations through writing, and demonstrating their comprehension of the text.

Spelling:  For the next couple of weeks in spelling we will be reviewing the spelling of common first grade sight words.  I know these words will be easy for the students so for their test I will require them to use the words in a sentence.  I will send home the sentences that will be given for the assessment on Monday.  I will be counting this assessment as two different grades.  I will assess for spelling and for grammar.  For example, I will be assessing if  the sentences should begin with capital letters and end with punctuation marks.

Math:  The students will finish up our topic on measurement this week!  We are going to have a test on Wednesday.  Please be on the look out for a practice test that will be sent home Tuesday.  Thursday, we will begin learning how to read a clock.

Our standardized test is not far away.  I am using our afternoon time to review over skills that have been taught this year.  The review sessions will be filled with games and hands-on activities.  If you are going to be absent, please let me know so that I can plan on sending review materials home.
