We have survived Halloween week! I hope each of you get some much needed rest this weekend. Don't forget to turn your clocks back an hour Saturday night!
Here are a few reminders for this week:
- Wear your jersey Monday for P.E.
- Field trip Friday!
- Please make sure your child's name is written in their jackets.
Here is what we will be doing in class this week:
Reading: We will be reading "Duck for President" by Doreen Cronin. The students will participate in a sequencing activity, writing their own political speech, and creating a campaign button. The students will need to bring a picture of any politician running for office on Tuesday. The pictures may come from magazines, newspapers, or the internet. On Thursday, the students will take an AR test on the story for a comprehension grade.
I will be sending home library books for the students to read each night. The books will be on the students reading level. The students will take an AR test when they finish the book to test for comprehension.
Language Arts: It is time to take our writing to the next level! The students will be taking their simples sentences and will create compound sentences using conjunctions. They will participate in centers that will guide them through the process of writing compound sentences. One of the centers will be an "individualized learning" center. This center will be structured to the individual needs of each student. For example, if your child is needing help in writing. When they come to this center, they will primarily focus on proper writing techniques that will incorporate compound sentences.
Spelling Words: farm, brown, cover, poster, animal, barn, hard, card, paper, charge
Challenge Words: campaign and requirement
Math: I am blown away with how quickly my students mastered money! This week, we will begin learning how to solve two-digit addition problems using mental math. I will guide the students through strategies that will teach them to add WITHOUT using their fingers.
Science: This week, we will begin exploring human body systems. The students will learn about the brain & nervous system and the skeletal system. The students will participate in activities to help them learn the major functions of each system and their importance. On Wednesday, we will create the skeletal system using vegetables!
