We have hit the ground running our first week back! I have been blown away with the academic growth I am seeing in my class each and every day. There has been many times this week that I have had to remind myself that I teach first grade and not third grade. The students are literally begging for more! This week in Math, many of my students mastered subtracting two-digit numbers with regrouping. So, I challenged them with a three-digit subtraction problem with regrouping multiple times. To my surprise, they nailed it! I literally had chill bumps as I watched their little minds explode. I am one proud teacher!
Here are a few reminders:
- Wear jerseys for PE on Monday.
- No school on January 21st.
- Report cards will be going out on Monday. Please look over your child's report card and return signed. If you would like to schedule a conference, please email me so that we can schedule a time.
Here is what we will be doing next week:
Spelling words: tough, rough, enough, play, subtract, ancient, gray, ghost, about, would
Challenge words: believe, skeptic, civilization, experience, similar (choose one)
Language Arts: Last week, we began learning about complete, fragment, and run-on sentences. The students seemed to grasp complete and fragment sentences but need a little more work on run-on sentences. This week, they will rotate through centers that will help with these skills. I will also be introducing helping verbs. Be prepared to hear our helping verbs song over and over and over....
Reading: We have begun our chapter book, Summer of the Sea Serpent by Mary Pope Osborne. The students are LOVING the mystery it leaves at the end of each chapter. They are in the process of completing a comprehension booklet that challenges them in comprehension. I hope you are enjoying reading with your child every night. The books I am sending home are at their reading level. The students need to be able to read majority of the book on their own. Please make sure to send the books back so that I can return them to the library.
Math: We are blowing through subtracting two-digit number with regrouping and will be rolling into learning how to use addition and subtraction when counting money. The students will have a test Thursday on the subtraction with and without regrouping.
Science: Thank you to Mrs. Connie (Sam G.'s grandmother) for coming to help us wrap up our lessons on the three types of rocks and the rock cycle. The kids had a blast making rocks out of crayons! This week, we will be learning about the three layers of the Earth.
I hope you all have a great weekend! Please let me know if you need anything.
