Week of January 21st

First grade has been very blessed this week.  Ms. Connie (Sam Grady's grandmother) came to help us in centers and we received a letter from Robert Munsch (an author we studied from the previous unit).  One of my favorite sayings from this week is from a conversation between Deleta and another student.  Deleta made the comment that they were great writers and how they must enjoy writing.  One of the students replied, "I do, but sometimes you just wear me out."  Bahahahaha!!!!

Here are a few reminders for the week:
-  No school on Monday.
-  Bring $1 by January 24th and enjoy a pajama day on Friday, January 25th.
-  Make sure to order Script so that your child can participate in Free Dress on January 32st.

Here is a sneak peek of what we will be doing this week:

Language Arts:   The students are really enjoying our mystery book, The Summer of the Sea Serpent by Mary Pope Osborne.  We will continue reading this book in class.  The students will also continue working in centers that will cover comprehension of the story, letter writing to a soldier, handwriting skills, and identifying helping verbs.

Reading:  The students are doing really well with their AR tests.  I want to encourage you to continue reading with them for 15 minutes every night or one chapter.  My goal is for all of my students to become independent readers by the end of the year.  I will be assessing their oral fluency this week!

Spelling Words:  thing, string, sing, bring, king, money, island, serpent, afraid, fight

Challenge Words:  hideous, determine, answer, mythical, rhyme (choose at least one)

Math:  We have survived subtracting two-digit numbers with regrouping!!!  I am so proud of my students and how hard they work.  This week, we will be taking the skills we have learned and applying it to when we add and subtract money.  The students will be making shopping lists of food and toys to help with this skill.

Science:  This week in science, we will begin collecting and organizing weather information.  I will be sending home a weather chart for the students to begin keeping up with the weather.  They may use a weather app on their Ipad, watch the news, or look in the newspaper for this information.
