Week of January 20th

We have had another wonderful week in First grade.  The students are growing confident and more independent each and every day.  Please make sure you are reading with your child EVERY night!

Here are a few reminders for the week:
-  We will not have school on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King day.
-  Free Dress Friday for those of you who have ordered Script this month.
-  Return library books by Thursday.
-  Unit Culmination is Friday, January 31.

Here is a sneak peek at our week:

Language Arts:  The kiddos will be rotating through centers that will focus on spelling words, reading comprehension, and subject-verb agreement.  While they are in centers, I will be assessing reading fluency.  I am very anxious to see how much they have improved since Christmas break.  Please make sure to read with them EVERY night!

Spelling Words:  dragon, Earth, were, sand, land, air, triangle, rectangle, mind, friend

Math:  We have begun learning how to identify shapes by finding their edges and vertices!  The students will be using problem solving strategies as we investigate different shapes and the composite of shapes.  On Friday, we will begin to divide our shapes into equal parts.  The kids will participate in a play-dough activity that will help the them see equal and unequal parts in a shape.

Science:  In conceptual last week, we learned about volcanoes and plate tectonics.  The kids will investigate the types of rocks found in the Earth and will discuss the characteristics of volcano rocks.  They will also make their very own sedimentary rocks!!
