Week of February 24th

We have had a wonderful week enjoying the sunshine and learning!  The students are LOVING our Geronimo Stilton book.  We are always using the clues to predict what will happen next.  My favorite part is when I overhear the kids compare themselves to the characters.  They are experiencing reading in a way that makes them feel apart of the story.  Next week, they will be bringing home their books as part of their reading assignment.  Please make sure they bring their book back each day.

For our next unit the students will need the following books:  Thea Stilton and the Journey to the Lion's Den (A Geronimo Stilton Adventure and Secret of the Prince's Tomb (AIO Imagination Station Books).  The students will need these books on March 3rd.

Here are a few reminders:
-  Wear BDS P.E. attire on Monday.
-  Please make sure to return library books on Thursday.
-  I will need help with centers on Thursday.  We will have Math centers from 8:10 to 9:00 and Language Arts centers from 1:55 to 2:40.  Please let me know if you will be able to help.
-  Student Council will be selling snacks as part of our fundraiser for India.
-  On Friday, everyone will need to bring protective eyewear (goggles) and wear light colored clothes that you do not mind being messed up.

Here is a sneak peek at our week:

Language Arts:  I will be introducing adverbs to the students this week!  I am really excited about the hands-on activities they will participate in to learn that an adverb modifies a verb.  The students will participate in centers to apply their spelling words, Zap types of words, and create a sun full of adverbs.

Spelling:  The students will be choosing their new list of words on Monday.  Please check their planner for their list.  We will have a test on FRIDAY

Math:  We have finished our My Math curriculum and I am now pulling second grade material.  Right now, we are focusing on MONEY!  If you are out shopping, allow your kiddos to count the change!  If your child masters these second grade skills, they will receive an "E" for "exceeds first grade standards".

India:  This week, we will be creating Diwali Diyas (candles).  The Indian New Year is Diwali and they celebrate good over evil by lighting rows of lamps or 'diyas'.  We will place our candles by the elephants outside our classroom on Friday.  We will need 16 tea light candles and air dry clay for this activity.  Please let me know if you can bring these items.  We will need them on Tuesday.
